Bovine Respiratory Disease
One of the most costly health problems faced by beef and dairy producers
is bovine respiratory disease or BRD. Many viruses
and bacteria play a role in the bovine respiratory disease syndrome.
Even a mild case of bovine respiratory disease can set the stage
for infection by other pathogens, weakening the immune system and
making the animal more susceptible to secondary infections.
Symptoms of bovine respiratory disease include discharge from the
nose and eyes, fever, coughing and respiratory tract lesions. Animals
affected with severe bovine respiratory disease may have so much
trouble breathing that they cannot eat or drink.
To prevent bovine respiratory disease, every producer should use
a potent, effective, broad-spectrum respiratory vaccine as
a part of the herd health program.
