Custom vaccines:
Beef and Dairy Cattle
Mycoplasma bovis vaccines
Other custom vaccines
Keeping animals healthy is a constant concern
for beef and dairy producers. When new diseases crop up for which
no vaccine is available,
or when
existing vaccines don’t seem to be effective, custom vaccines
may be the solution.
Custom vaccines are manufactured from the specific
viruses or bacteria that cause disease in your operation. Working
with your veterinarian,
Novartis Animal Health can identify the disease agent and create
a vaccine to use in your herd.
Whatever the health problem – respiratory disease, pinkeye,
gastrointestinal disease, warts, mastitis, and others – custom
vaccines can be an effective, cost-effective answer.
Mycoplasma
bovis vaccines
Novartis Animal Health US offers
Mycoplasma bovis custom vaccines. This bacteria has more
than 20 different strains, therefore herd-specific
vaccines are the best available solution.
M. bovis is an extremely
challenging organism that can haunt infected herds for years.
It can be difficult to diagnose,
and antibiotics
are often ineffective.
Infection with M. bovis can
lead to:
- Immunosuppression
- Bovine respiratory diseases (i.e. shipping fever and
calf pneumonia)
- Infertility, reproductive problems
- Joint infections
- Skin abscesses
- Ear, eye infections
- Mastitis
Signs of disease in dairy cattle
- Younger animals – respiratory disease
- Mature cows – mastitis
- Milk quality and quantity quickly deteriorates
- Sudden swelling, infection in one or more quarters
- Abnormal milk 1 to 3 days later
Signs of disease in beef cattle
- Ocular, nasal discharge
- Decreased appetite
- Depression
- Arched stance
- Fever
If diagnosis determines that
M. bovis is the culprit, a USDA-approved
custom vaccine can be developed and delivered to your
veterinarian. These killed vaccines are
safe and sterile,
with no shedding of the organism.
